On June 26, STREAM IT welcomed Project Coordinators Anna Lisa Addis from Road-STEAMer and Juancho Pons from STEAMbrace to the Co-Creation Working Lab Workshop on “What is STEAM Education”.

Organized by STREAM IT’s Project Coordinator, Katalin Oborni from HETFA Research Institute, this online workshop aimed to provide a glimpse into the innovative work being conducted by 3 sisters’ projects, sharing insights and experiences on STEAM approaches in science education, with a focus on gender-sensitive and inclusive policy deployment.

On the agenda, the first half was dedicated to overseeing the Road-STEAMer and STEAMbrace projects, with presentations that offered valuable insight into the scope, milestones and challenges faced by each project as they navigate their unique goals and initiatives. The second half featured breakout sessions on practical applications of the impact of STEAM approaches on gender inclusivity, sparking a lively and thought-provoking discussion. These sessions facilitated exchange, allowing for a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities that arise when trying to increase diversity and representation in STEM fields, particularly for underrepresented groups such as women.

With the productive and constructive insights and opinions that were raised by the different participants, we were able to identify potential solutions and strategies for creating a more inclusive and equitable STEM education environment.

“Imagine an educational revolution that shatters the status quo and ignites a passion for learning in students of all backgrounds and genders!”

As thoroughly explained by Anna Lisa Addis, Project Manager & Research Associate (The Lisbon Council), STEAM is not just about slapping a creative label on an already established formula, nor is it about using the arts as a shiny lure to attract girls and women into STEM fields. It’s a bold vision for transforming education, where technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics come together in harmony.

In this paradigm, we’re not just teaching – we’re facilitating learning by engaging with knowledge in a way that ignites the learner’s curiosity, encourages creativity, fosters collaboration and inspires each one of them to find their personalized pathways. That is what we are working towards in STREAM IT – our goal is to break down barriers, foster inclusivity, and empower each student to take ownership of their education.

With the increased demand of an interdisciplinary workforce in all industries, by embracing STEAM, we are not just preparing students for a job; we are equipping them with the skills to shape the future. We are teaching them to think critically, solve real-world problems, and make their mark on the world.

It’s time to reimagine education and unleash the full potential of our young minds!
