The Challenge: Bridging the Aspiration Gap Through Representation

Representation shapes aspiration. Girls are far more likely to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) when they can see women thriving in these fields. Yet, too often, gender stereotypes and a lack of relatable role models limit their confidence, sense of belonging, and ultimately, their ambition.

Digital platforms offer a powerful way to change that. Social media can make inspiring stories of women in science and technology accessible to all, showing what is possible and challenging outdated norms. But visibility alone isn’t enough. Girls also need supportive communities to turn interest into engagement and develop the resilience they need to succeed in fields historically dominated by men.

STREAM IT's Vision: Connecting Role Models and Community

This is the vision behind STREAM IT. Through social media, the project connects girls, educators, and role models across Europe, sharing real stories, practical advice, and tangible examples of success in STEM. Teachers and universities play a key role in promoting inclusive narratives, creating ecosystems where girls feel welcomed, supported, and inspired.

The project not only shares inspiring stories of established women in science and technology but also amplifies the voices of young women currently studying at universities across Europe. Their testimonies provide relatable examples and make the pathways into STEM more tangible, grounding the narrative in real experiences.

STREAM IT doesn’t only celebrate women in STEM – it also actively demonstrates that girls can belong. In October 2025, the project ran a successful Instagram campaign highlighting trailblazers such as Ada Lovelace and Jane Goodall, showcasing how both historical figures were motivated by their deep passion for their respective exciting fields. The posts sparked engagement, conversation, and enthusiasm, showing how storytelling can bridge inspiration and aspiration.

Creating Belonging: The Impact of Narrative and Networks

By combining visible role models with active, supportive networks, STREAM IT does more than spark curiosity – it shifts mindsets, builds confidence, and opens doors for the next generation of women scientists, engineers, and innovators. Each story shared, each connection made, is a step toward creating STEM environments where girls feel their talents, ambitions, and identities are valued.

Because equality in STEM isn’t just about access; it requires creating a sense of belonging. And belonging begins with the stories we share, the communities we nurture, and the confidence we help young women build in themselves. STREAM IT fosters this by connecting girls with educators, role models, and peers, offering inclusive digital spaces where they can explore opportunities, ask questions, and learn from the experiences of others. Through these interactions, young women are better equipped to make informed choices and to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics with confidence.
